Was doing a series of article contributions for a travel magazine (with a tech-travel section) so I got a bunch of nifty gadgets to check out. One of the items was this HD pocket camcorder made by Genius, the G-Shot HD501.

I know Genius makes a lot of accessories from pointing devices to keyboards, speakers and all but this is the first time I saw a camcorder from them (Flip is getting some more affordable competition).

The mini camcorder looks like a toy at first but it’s a actually a tough one and weather-resistant so you can take this out on a rainy day (or winter) without any worry. Of course, it’s not completely water-proof so I didn’t even tried tossing it into our aquarium with the fishes.

The Genius G-Shot HD501 takes videos up to 720p (1280×720p) at 30fps. It can also take still photos but only at 3MP resolution. All the files are stored in an SD Card (max 16GB) sealed tightly with a rubber cap. It’s even got a 3.5mm audio jack so you can listen to music with the built-in MP3 player.
I wasn’t able to get the exact price but I reckon it could be somewhere around six or seven grand.

If you go to Virramall these days, you’d see tons of these cheap HD media players being sold in stores (some of which, selling as low as DVD player prices). There must be demand for these as I’ve seen over a dozen models already.
There’s the original Popcorn Hour, the HDX Media, and the ones from Asus and Western Digital (perhaps even the earlier Apple TV).

Even the branded ones are becoming more affordable too. Check out the prices below:
KWorld Media Player M101 – Php2,250
TVIX M-3100U (160GB) – Php4,400
Buffalo Link Theater LT-V100 – Php5,400
Western Digital Media Player – Php5,500
Western Digital Media Player Live – Php6,900
Asus Media Player HD O! Play – Php5,800
Brite-View Cinema Tube – Php6,350
Seagate FreeAgent Theater Plus – Php7,400
Even Western Digital has a couple of different models in this category. I reckon hardware companies such as them would benefit a lot from people letting go of optical disks in favor of hard disk drives.

In celebration of its 25 years of making laptop computers, Toshiba announced a limited edition “netbook tablet” with dual screens, the Toshiba Libretto W100.
This dual-screen tablet netbook isn’t really the first one we’ve seen (MSI has a prototype they showed back in January during CES 2010), it might be the first one to hit the market this August.

Each of the display is a 7-inch multi-touch screen with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. The tablet will be running an Intel Pentium U5400 CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and 64GB SSD.

It will also have Bluetooth, WiFi but just USB ports and include an 8-cell battery. Windows 7 will come pre-installed out of the box.
Toshiba did not indicate how much these babies will sell for but numbers going around says it could be as steep as $1,099.
