With a population of 75,000, Ercis was the hardest hit by the quake; about 55 miles south, Van sustained major damage. Turkey is highly susceptible to earthquakes as it sits on major geological fault lines.

The quake, which hit at 1:41 p.m. local time, was upgraded from a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 to 7.3 magnitude. The U.S. Geological Survey later revised the magnitude to 7.2.

Hundreds of rescue workers worked through the night attempting to dig out survivors after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey, leveling dozens of buildings and killing hundreds.

Aftershocks with magnitudes of up to 6.0 were felt within 10 hours of when the quake hit Sunday afternoon. Turkey’s interior minister Idris Naim Sahin said Monday that the death toll had risen to 270, but an estimated 1,000 people could have been killed based on the size of the quake, according to The Associated Press.

Sahin said that 80 multi-story buildings collapsed in the town of Ercis, with people trapped in 40 of them.

“Rescue work is ongoing, especially at buildings where [rescuers] have determined survivors,” Sahin said.

The temblor’s epicenter was in the village of Tabanli, near the city of Van close to the Iranian border, the AP reported.

Most of these buildings in the affected part of Turkey are not built up to code. Turkey does have fairly stringent building codes but a lot of the buildings are just ignored or they are not enforced. It is estimated that only one-third of buildings in Turkey comply with codes.

Steven Paul “Steve” Jobs (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American computer entrepreneur and inventor. He was co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. Jobs also previously served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, following the acquisition of Pixar by Disney. He was credited in Toy Story (1995) as an executive producer.

In the late 1970s, Jobs—along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula and others—designed, developed, and marketed one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers, the Apple II series. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of Xerox PARC’s mouse-driven graphical user interface, which led to the creation of the Macintosh. After losing a power struggle with the board of directors in 1985, Jobs resigned from Apple and founded NeXT, a computer platform development company specializing in the higher-education and business markets. Apple’s subsequent 1996 buyout of NeXT brought Jobs back to the company he co-founded, and he served as its CEO from 1997 until August 2011. source: wiki

Along downtown Manila’s baywalk, cars and buses were stuck and residents waded through floodwaters as waves as high as palm trees washed over the seawall, turning a six-lane highway into a huge brown river.

MANILA (Updated 1:04 p.m.) — Massive flooding hit Manila after Typhoon Pedring (international codename: Nesat) made landfall Tuesday.

Around the central Robinsons shopping mall, fierce winds toppled tables and tree branches, sending people for cover. Visibility was poor as the rain obscured the view. One pedestrian was injured by falling debris and was bloodied.

Manila Hospital moved patients from its ground floor, where waters were neck-deep, spokeswoman Evangeline Morales said. Hospital generators were flooded and the building had no power since early Tuesday.

Visibility in the city was poor, with pounding rains obscuring the view. Emergency workers were evacuating river areas in the city that are notorious for flooding.

In other parts of Manila, emergency workers were evacuating river areas that are notorious for flooding.

Residents in one neighborhood of Quezon City were fleeing their homes due to rising water from the nearby San Mateo River.

Residents in Marikina City were also forced evacuated after the Marikina River already reached near the 18-meter level.

In the financial district of Makati, a billboard fell on two cars and a bus, causing injuries.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Pedring” slightly weakened after making landfall over the boundary of Aurora and Isabela provinces Tuesday morning.

Pagasa said “Pedring” packed maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) from 140 kph near the center. source

At the height of Pedring’s wrath, floods submerged roads and establishments.

A dzMM news report said at least 30 vehicles were affected as basement parking area in Sofitel hotel gets flooded. A forced evacuation was ordered, following the collapse of a seawall behind the hotel premises, the dzMM report added.

Department of Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez has assured that all the Sofitel guests have already been transferred to other hotels.

Pagasa, in a briefing 5:00 pm, said heavy rains coincided with the Manila bay high tide, causing a water surge.

In Manila, floods have been reported along major thoroughfare Roxas Boulevard and as 5:30 pm, Roxas Boulevard is impassable to all types of vehicles. Floods reach chest-high near the Luneta park, a radio dzMM report said.

From Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines- Tropical Storm Pedring (international name: Nesat) has strengthened into a typhoon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Monday.

Pedring was estimated to be at 350 kilometers east-southeast of Casiguran, Aurora and was still moving slowly west northwest at 17 kilometers per hour, Pagasa said during a press conference shortly before noon.

Winds of up to 120 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph are expected, according to Pagaasa.

Typhoon Pedring leaves 8 dead in Luzon — officials

Eight people, including five children, were killed after Typhoon Pedring (international name: Nesat) battered northern Luzon with its strong winds and rainfall, officials said Tuesday.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director Benito Ramos confirmed in a television interview that three children and their grandmother were killed after a wall collapsed over their house in Valenzuela City.

A one-year-old child meanwhile drowned in floodwaters after she fell into a creek in Bato town in Catanduanes, he added.

Two other individuals were confirmed dead after they were separately hit by falling trees in Castillejos town in Zambales and Candaba town in Pampanga, according to Ramos.

For his part, National Police spokesman Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said a 19-year-old resident of Olongapo City in Zambales was killed while another person was hurt in a landlside at the height of Pedring’s rampage.

In a text message sent to reporters, Cruz identified the fatality as Brian Anthony Sumanga.

An initial investigation showed that the landslide happened about 10:45 a.m. and hit a house along Upper Otero Avenue in Barangay Mabayuan in Olongapo City.

Hurt in the incident was 69-year-old Pacita Sumanga-dela Cruz. She is undergoing treatment at the James Gordon Hospital as of posting time.

Component cost: $187.51
Price without contract: $599
Price with contract: $199
Lowest available price: $197 (Wal-Mart)

By David Goldman, staff writer

Unlike other smartphone manufacturers, Apple generally doesn’t allow its devices to be sold for any less than in its stores, so $199 is almost certainly what you’re going to pay for a new iPhone 4 with a two-year contract. Buying it at Wal-Mart will knock that down a buck or two.

With component costs of nearly $190, the iPhone 4 is the most expensive smartphone on the market to manufacture, according to research firm iSuppli. The largest single component of that cost is the iPhone’s Retina Display, which costs an estimated $30 to make

But the real wallet wallop comes if you break or lose your iPhone 4 and have to replace it before your contract is up. Buying one without AT&T’s subsidy will set you back a jaw-dropping $600.

Samsung Galaxy S – Vibrant

Component cost: $165
Price without contract: $399.99
Price with contract: $199.99
Lowest available price: $39.99 (Amazon.com, Wirefly)

Samsung followed in Research In Motion’s successful footsteps by launching what is more or less the same phone on each of the four major U.S. wireless networks.

The phone is Samsung’s Galaxy S class, and The Vibrant is T-Mobile’s version. AT&T’s Samsung Captivate can be had for about the same price with a new two-year contract, but without a new contract, it will set you back $100 more than the Vibrant. Sprint’s Epic, the 4G version of the phone, can’t be bought for less than $200, however. Verizon’s Fascinate version hasn’t yet gone to market.

With similar capabilities to other top-of-the-line Android peers, the Vibrant is bargain at $40 with a new contract. Without one, prepare to shell out $400.

BlackBerry Torch

Component cost: $171.05
Price without contract: $499.99
Price with contract: $199.99
Lowest available price: $99.99 (Amazon.com, Wirefly)

The $200 price point surprised a number of people, given that Research In Motion’s top-of-the-line BlackBerry doesn’t match up all that well with the features and app availability of its high-end smartphone rivals, especially the iPhone or Android alternatives.

But at $100 from retailers like Amazon.com and Wirefly, the Torch can be a pretty good deal. It’s not quite as fast and doesn’t have the screen resolution of some of its peers, but the BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard is a big plus for heavy e-mailers and texters.

The touch screen makes the Torch more expensive than most BlackBerry phones, but surprisingly it’s not the priciest: Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm sells for $540 without a contract, and the Bold goes for $510 on Verizon.

HTC Droid Incredible

Component cost: $163.35
Price without contract: $529.99
Price with contract: $199.99
Lowest available price: $69.99 (Wirefly)

One of the most sought-after smartphones on the market, Verizon’s Droid Incredible only recently became available for next-day shipping — four months after it went on sale.

So with such “incredible” demand and high-end features like an 8 megapixel camera and Android 2.2, it’s a surprise that it can be had for as little as $70 on Wirefly with a new two-year contract.

At $40 less than the Droid X and $10 less than the Droid 2 without a new contract, it’s also the least expensive Droid-branded smartphone that Verizon offers. It doesn’t have a keyboard like the Droid 2 or a 4.3-inch screen like the Droid X, but if you don’t need those features, the Droid Incredible is competitively priced.

Palm Pre Plus

Component cost: $115.32
Price without contract: $599.99 (Verizon), $299.99 (AT&T)
Price with contract: $99.99 (AT&T), Free (Verizon)
Lowest available price: Free (Verizon, Wirefly)

One of the smallest smartphones on the market, the Pre also has one of the lowest overall component costs. That, combined with the fact that Palm has sold far fewer Pres than it expected, has led Verizon to give it away for free.

The original Pre is still available on the Sprint network for $150, but the slightly improved “Plus” version can be had on AT&T for $99 or Verizon for “sign your name on the dotted line.” That’s pretty impressive for a critically acclaimed smartphone that just never really took off with consumers.

Still, the phone is more than a year old and has been outdone by most other smartphones on the market. That makes the $600 price tag on Verizon’s network without a contract incredibly steep — especially considering that the same phone can be had without a contract on AT&T for $300 less.

Motorola Droid X

Price without contract: $569.99
Price with contract: $199.99
Lowest available price: $149.99 (Amazon.com, Wal-Mart)

You won’t find Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G or Samsung Epic 4G for any less than around $200. With the ability to connect to Sprint’s broadband-like 4G network, they’re arguably worth the cost.

But if you want a top-of-the-line Android phone, and you don’t want or need 4G (or if you’re one of the 250 million Americans without access to Sprint’s 4G network), the wildly praised Motorola Droid X can be had for $150.

At $569 without a new two-year contract with Verizon, the phone can come at a steep price. But the 4.3-inch screen is tied with the EVO for the biggest on the market, and its components and features rival those of the iPhone 4.

The Fight that you waiting for Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs Victor Ortiz

Announced first in April 2011, the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight will finally happen Yesterday. After Victor Ortiz’s (29 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws, 22 knockouts) win against previously undefeated and reigning WBC Welterweight title-holder, Andre Berto, Floyd Mayweather Jr (41 wins, 0 loss, 25 knockouts) climb up the squared circle and presented himself to be the next opponent of the newly crowned champion.

The long wait is finally here. Mayweather versus Ortiz will happen tonight inside the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Boxing fans are already anxious to hear Michael Buffer, the ring announcer, to deliver his popular boxing spiel – “Are you ready to rumble?”

About Floyd MayWeather, Jr. and Victor Ortiz

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. (born Floyd Sinclair; February 24, 1977), is an American professional boxer. He is a five-division world champion, where he has won ten world titles, including the lineal championship in two different weight classes. He is a two-time The Ring “Fighter of the Year” winning the award in 1998 and 2007, and also Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) “Fighter of the Year” in 2007. He is undefeated as a professional boxer.

Currently, Mayweather is the WBC World Welterweight Champion. He was formerly rated as the “number one” pound-for-pound best boxer in the world by most sporting news and boxing websites, including The Ring, BoxRec.com, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, BBC Sports and Yahoo! Sports but was removed from the rankings due to retirement and currently due to inactivity. source

He was previously in the Light Welterweight division, where he held the USBA title and the WBO NABO title.[3] Ortiz, with a crowd-pleasing, aggressive style, two-fisted power and boyish charm, was made the 2008 ESPN Prospect of the Year. Ortiz holds the extraordinary distinction of having knocked down every opponent he has faced, except for Floyd Mayweather Jr.

He is currently rated as one of the “top two” Welterweight boxers in the world by most sporting news and boxing websites, including The Ring, BoxRec.com, and ESPN. source

The BOOM

September 17, 2011 saw the faceoff between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The first three rounds were great and the when the fourth round, everything broke loose. It started with a head butt from Ortiz which made him lose a point. He was reprimanded by the refereeand when the fight resumes, Ortiz embraced Mayweather as a way of apologizing for the head butt. Mayweather in turn gave him a combination of a left and right hook that promptly downed Ortiz, ending the fight unexpectedly. Ortiz tried very hard to get up but referee Joe Cortez has already called an end to the fight.

“We touched gloves and we were back to fighting and then I threw the left and right hand after the break. In the ring you have to protect yourself at all times.” Mayweather said. Ortiz on the other hand said, “I took the break by the referee and I obeyed exactly as I was told. And then, boom, he blindsided me.”

She is also a licensed architect and topped the Architecture Licensure Examination in July 2010 in the Philippines.

Supsup joined the Binibining Pilipinas 2011 and won the Binibining Pilipinas-Universe title when the pageant was held at the Araneta Coliseum on April 10, 2011. This victory entitled her the right to represent the Philippines at the Miss Universe 2011 pageant held in São Paulo, Brazil on September 12, 2011.

Before the Pageant night, she topped the Telemundo Online Polls (the fan polls).
From: www.tempo.com.ph

MANILA, Philippines – Although she admits being in a relationship, Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup declined to divulge the name of her boyfriend in order to protect his privacy.

“Baka di na siya makalabas ng bahay!” the 25-year-old GenSan beauty exclaimed in a live phone interview on “Umagang Kay Ganda (UKG),” Sept. 14.

She had already divulged on “Bandila” on Sept. 13 that she’s in a romantic relationship, saying, “Hindi ako showbiz eh. I want to be honest. I want people to know about it.”

She did reveal to “UKG” that her beau was Catholic before becoming Born Again Christian.

Her latest revelation may well reflect in Shamcey’s much talked-about response to the question that judge Vivica Fox posed to her in the Q&A portion of the Miss Universe pageant—that is, if she would change her religion to marry the person she loves.

The Architecture board top-notcher said that she won’t change her religion for the man she loves “because the first person that I love is God…

“And if that person loves me, he should love my God too.”

The Miss Universe winner was crowned Monday night on NBC, with Miss Angola taking the top prize. Shamcey Supsup was heralded for her question and answer round, with many loyal fans (new and old) supporting her. She finished the competition as 3rd runner-up, with a statement from Oprah Winfrey claiming Supsup should’ve won.

Question:

“Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person you love, why or why not?’’

Shamcey Supsup Answered:

“If I have to change my religious belief, I will not marry the person I love because the first person that I love is God and He created me. And I have my faith, my principles and it what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God.’’

President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush were in attendance, and all four walked around the reflecting pools and observed a private moment of silence before the ceremony.

President Obama read Psalm 46 while Former President George W. Bush read from a letter written by President Abraham Lincoln to a mother who had lost five sons in the Civil War.

“I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine,” he said. “I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the republic they died to save.”

Sunday night, President Barack Obama gave a speech at a “Concert For Hope” at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., where he said that the September 11th terrorist attacks had failed to destroy the country’s unity and ideals.

Obama said. “In the biggest cities and the smallest towns, in our schools and workplaces, you still see people of every conceivable race, religion and ethnicity, all of them pledging allegiance to one flag, all of them reaching for the same American dream: ‘E pluribus unum’ — ‘Out of many, we are one,” source

102 Minutes That Changed America

In the 2001 attacks, 19 terrorists hijacked four jetliners, crashing two of them into the World Trade Center towers and one into the Pentagon. The fourth jet, which was apparently headed for another target in Washington, D.C., instead crashed into a Pennsylvania field after passengers fought back against the hijackers and foiled the plot. Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, then sheltering in Afghanistan, claimed responsibility for the attacks, which killed nearly 3,000.

Shortly after the 2001 attacks, the U.S. invaded Afghanistan and then subsequently launched a war in Iraq, two conflicts that continue today. The U.S. has faced sharp criticism for some aspects of the war on terror, including the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the practice of holding enemy combatants at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. The most recent milestone in the war was the killing of bin Laden in a nighttime raid by special forces within Pakistan.
